Professor Sculean serves on the editorial board of more than 12 dental journals, among others Journal of Dental Research, Journal of Clinical Periodontology, Clinical Oral Implants Research, Journal of Periodontal Research and Clinical Advances in Periodontics and is Associate Editor of Quintessence International, Clinical Oral Investigations, Section Editor of BMC Oral Health and Editor in Chief of Oral Health and Preventive Dentistry.

Professor Sculean served from 2009-2010 as president of the Periodontal Research Group of the IADR, is past president of the Swiss Society of Periodontology, President (for the period 2018-2019) of the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) and President Elect of the International Academy of Periodontology (IAP) (for the period 2018-2020). He is board member of the Osteology Foundation and member of the Workshop Committee of the EFP.

His research interests focus on periodontal wound healing, regenerative and plastic-aesthetic periodontal therapy, use of antibiotics, antiseptics and novel approaches such as lasers and photodynamic therapy in the treatment of periodontal and peri-implant infections.

Main Podium Lecture

The Bernese Concept for the Treatment of Soft Tissue Defects at Natural Teeth and Dental Implants

The aim of this lecture is to provide the general practitioner and the specialist with a comprehensive, evidence based concept aiming to successfully manage periodontally compromised patients. Treatment concept based on the scientific evidence from the last three decades will be provided.

The concept will address the most important aspects related to the treatment of periodontal and peri-implant diseases including diagnosis, nonsurgical, antibiotic/antiseptic, surgical, regenerative and plastic esthetic surgery using the Modified Coronally Advanced Tunnel (MCAT), the Laterally Closed Tunnel (LCT) or the combined MCAT + LCT technique using autogenous tissue or soft tissue replacement biomaterials.

Treatment concepts for peri-implantitis and recession coverage at implants will round up the lectures. Both evidence-based presentations and case presentations/discussion will illustrate on when and how the scientific evidence can be included in the overall treatment philosophy helping the clinician to immediately implement these acquired concepts in the daily practice.

Highlights:
• Etiology, prevalence, microbiology and pathogenesis of periodontal and peri-implant diseases
• Treatment planning / Case presentations– Nonsurgical periodontal therapy / old and new concepts
• The Modified Coronally Advanced Tunnel (MCAT) and the Laterally Closed Tunnel (LCT) techniques for the treatment of single and multiple gingival recessions
• Treatment of soft tissue defects around implants

Hands-on Workshop (Wednesday, October 2, 2024 | 8:00am - 12:00pm)

Soft Tissue Management Around Teeth and Implants

This course addresses general dentists and specialists who want to learn more about an evidence based concept on the treatment of periodontally compromised patients, regenerative and plastic-esthetic periodontal and peri-implant surgery along with clinical concepts for the prevention and treatment of peri-implant diseases.

Starting with an overview on the anatomy, microbiology, etiology and pathogenesis of periodontitis and peri-implant diseases, the Bernese concept is based on comprehensive biological research of the last decades. Based on complex clinical cases, the various phases of periodontal therapy (i.e. systemic, hygienic, corrective and maintenance) including implant therapy in periodontally compromised patients and their long-term maintenance will be demonstrated. This hands-on workshop will cover plastic-esthetic surgery using the Modified Coronally Advanced Tunnel (MCAT), the Laterally Closed Tunnel (LCT) or the combined MCAT + LCT technique using autogenous tissue or soft tissue replacement biomaterials.

Highlights:
• Treatment planning / Case presentations– Nonsurgical periodontal therapy / old and new concepts
• Flap designs and suturing techniques for resective or reconstructive periodontal surgery
• Rationale and surgical techniques for crown lengthening
• Treatment of furcations– Regenerative periodontal therapy
• Critical evaluation of biomaterials for periodontal and bone regeneration– Novel developments for bone regeneration
• The Modified Coronally Advanced Tunnel (MCAT) and the Laterally Closed Tunnel (LCT) techniques for the treatment of single and multiple gingival recessions
